Did you know that our National Education Association (NEA) already has a comprehensive framework that helps local unions navigate the rapid integration of AI on campuses and in classrooms?
The NEA’s July 2024 report on artificial intelligence, at its core, emphasizes a human-centered approach, asserting that students and educators must remain at the center of the educational experience. To support this, the NEA outlines five guiding principles: maintaining the irreplaceable value of interpersonal interactions, utilizing evidence-based tools that enhance rather than replace staff and faculty, ensuring ethical development with robust data protection, guaranteeing equitable access for all students, and promoting ongoing AI literacy and agency. These principles are designed to ensure that AI serves as an additive resource while protecting the professional integrity and rights of union members. With this report, the NEA provides a roadmap for unions to lead policy discussions and demand that technology is used to enhance our daily work lives, rather than diminish the roles of staff and faculty.
That’s why there is some concern with the current US administration’s executive order blocking the regulation of AI that would override state and local authorities. Learn more.
